Comment from artist Yume Aoyam
The Folk toys are spirited / filled with luck, life, and emotions.
From Edo Period to Meiji period (1868-1912), “Japanese Folk Toys” were made over various regions in Japan, using familiar materials such as paper and wood in hope of children to grow up healthy and happy.
They are born out of life of different areas of Japan, thus reflect local legends, beliefs, aesthetics and a sense of well-being.
In the artist’s room, I will create works based on the motif of “folk toys” born that way. I use embroidery and paint to create new stories about these toys, which are usually displayed on shelves, imagining that they are enchanted and are on a journey through the adventures of Japanese nature.

She researches the symbiosis between humans and nature, which repeatedly heals and destroys themselves, by observing modern life with a mythological mindset. She is interested in animals which can travel everywhere without boundaries even when the disaster strikes. And Yume Creates works using their skins and hair of various animals as materials before disposal.
