A visual exploration of the landscapes of Japan and the American West.

George NOBECHI

Photographer

In cinema, novels and poetry, the Far Eastern settings of Japan and the rugged Western landscapes of America have been depicted with a spiritual romanticism.

As we gaze upon these seemingly opposite geographies, we begin to see a common thread in the light and wind, as well as the attempts by humankind to live alongside nature.

This body of work, made on journeys through the two lands, is printed on traditional washi paper made at the Awagami Factory in Tokushima, on the island of Shikoku. The paper’s organic qualities create a three dimensionality in a medium known for its two-dimensionality, and evokes a sense of reverence.
