Completed in 2014, the “Artist Room – Bamboo” by Yoshitaka Nishikawa was designed as a tranquil retreat reminiscent of a bamboo grove, inviting guests to experience serenity in the heart of the city.
This season, as we mark 11 years since its creation, we share a conversation between the artist and the project leader, General Manager Ono, offering fresh reflections only possible with the passage of time.
Q. Are there any memorable episodes or challenges from the production process?
A. When I stayed at the hotel for several days during the production, I was most impressed by the professionalism of the hotel staff. Their communication, attentiveness, and graceful posture – even behind the scenes – left a lasting impression. Until then, I had never really paid attention to that aspect of hotels. It may not be directly related to the room’s creation, but it remains the most vivid memory. Honestly, I never struggled – it was all just fun.
Q. What do you see as the significance of presenting art in a hotel space?
A. Experiencing art in a hotel – a space that feels both everyday and extraordinary – offers inspiration and comfort, even for those who don’t usually visit museums. I believe hotels have the potential to become destinations in their own right, even more so than before.
Q. What message would you like to share with international guests through your work?
A. It may sound simple, but I’d be happiest if each guest feels free to interpret and enjoy the room in their own way.
Q. Have there been any memorable guest reactions after staying in the room?
A. Among all our Artist Rooms themed on “Japanese aesthetics,” this is one of the most requested.
Guests seem to love the striking contrast between the calming bamboo imagery and the cityscape of Shiodome’s skyline.
At night, the bamboo reflected in the windows is another highlight. The artist’s vision is clearly resonating with guests.
